What to consider when buying a guitar

Buying a guitar can sometimes feel a little daunting due to the enormous amount of options you have to choose from, but follow these steps should focus your mind through the process.

  1. Decide whether you would like to buy an acoustic or electric guitar. You can read more about this here.
  2. Determine your budget; this will narrow your options.
  3. Do some online research, refer to guitarists you know and respect or ask the salesperson at your local music store, for advice.
  4. Choose your desired style and features. Consider the shape, and materials from which the guitar is made; guitars are made from a variety of woods such as spruce, mahogany and rosewood, each has their own unique characteristics. Look at the hardware like tuning pegs and for electric guitars the pickups, knobs and pickup selectors.
  5. Once you have found a few options, it is time to try playing the guitars, feeling how each guitar plays and hearing its unique sound.

Choosing the guitar for you is a personal decision; there is no wrong or right choice. Happy shopping!
